Jeanne Marie Hibberd, Development Director

Jeanne Marie moved to Eastern Kentucky at age 12 and Appalachia has been her adopted home ever since. After receiving a BA in Philosophy from Berea College, Jeanne Marie began her career as a researcher and writer for the Mountain Association for Community Economic Development (MACED). That job led her to spend the next 21 years working with communities, nonprofits and businesses, primarily in Kentucky and Appalachia. Her experience includes program management, public policy research, fundraising, public relations, marketing and program evaluation.

In 1995, Jeanne Marie returned to work at MACED, as director of its Sustainable Communities program. A few years later she co-founded Communities by Choice, a nonprofit that promotes sustainable development, now based in Bend, Oregon. She has worked with nonprofit, business, educational and civic organizations, most recently serving as director of the Appalachian Fund and coordinator of the Entrepreneurship for the Public Good program at Berea College. She has also worked with Berea College’s development office.

Jeanne Marie is certified by the National Development Council as an Economic Development Finance Professional and has a Certificate in Fund Raising Management from The Fund Raising School at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.

She enjoys writing, cooking and birdwatching. She has published several articles and booklets on community development issues and is active in several civic organizations. In 1999, Jeanne Marie was selected as one of 44 “Kentucky Leaders for the New Century” by Leadership Kentucky.
