Mike Mullins, Executive Director
Mike Mullins was born at Hi Hat in the coalfields of Eastern Kentucky. He received his BA in American History from Berea College and his MA in American History from the University of Cincinnati, with an emphasis on the Revolutionary War period. After leaving Cincinnati, he moved back to the hills of Eastern Kentucky and began work at Alice Lloyd College in their Appalachian Studies Program.
After five years at ALC, he was hired as the 5th executive director of Hindman Settlement School in December of 1977. In December 2006, he completed his 29th year as executive director of Hindman Settlement School. He was chosen Knott Countian of the Year in 1992 and in May 2003, he received an honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Kentucky for his 25 years of service to the Appalachian region.
He is married to Frieda and they have three children, Brenda (34), Cassie (30), and Nathan (27). Mike is a member of the Hindman United Methodist Church where he teaches an adult Sunday School class, chairs the Finance Committee and is chairman of the Administrative Council. Mike loves to read, work in his garden, dabble in politics, listen to Bluegrass music and spend time with his large extended family, especially his grandchildren, Riley and Lily, and his down syndrome cousin, Bob, for whom he serves as guardian.
