Hindman Settlement School has appealed to donors to meet a couple of specific needs in the past six months and, once again, our donors have come through!

Special gifts have funded the following recent improvements:

New Boiler for May Stone Building—Thanks to Marcia S. Lawrence, Valerie Smith Bartley, Mark R. Holloway, Ann Johnson, Lewis Brothers, Inc., Jess Stoddart and Elmer K. Whitaker, we have a new boiler for the May Stone Building. The old boiler was constantly breaking down and considered dangerous. The new system, which cost $42,700 was installed in August and has made a noticeable difference in the comfort of the building. The energy savings should allow us to recover this investment in seven years.

New Laptop & Software—The Tennessee Society DAR has provided a gift of $3,503 to purchase a new laptop computer and software to support the Development & Communications program and allow our Folk Arts Education program to do digital recordings for use with the production of the Kid’s Radio segment and other cultural programs.

New Pottery Kiln—Thanks to a matching donation from Ruth F. Oberhelman, former State Regent of the Arkansas DAR, the Settlement was able to invest in a new pottery kiln to support the Folk Week pottery program. Potter, Mike Ware, reports the kiln has been set up and he is learning all the details of operating it.

Wireless Internet Access for May Stone Building—The Settlement has added wireless Internet access to its largest building used for many community events. Special thanks go to Archie Everage and TVS Cable, Inc. for donating the Internet connection and service, and to the Colonel Hardy Murfree Chapter DAR in Mufreesboro, TN for their gift of $1,500 to cover installation and set-up costs.
