Adult Literacy
The Settlement's adult literacy program is run in partnership with the Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative, whose purpose is to provide educational support services to Knott and other member counties. These services include: cooperative purchasing, dropout prevention, special education, professional development, safe schools, grant writing, middle school drug prevention and adult basic education.
The adult literacy program includes adult basic education and General Equivalency Diploma (GED) instruction. Each spring a recognition ceremony is held to honor those students who have received their GED. Free tutoring in reading, math and other subjects is available at the Opportunity Center.
These programs are located on the Settlement School campus in the Knott County Opportunity Center, which also houses the Knott County Public Library. The Opportunity Center is accessible to people with handicaps. Off-site class locations and home tutors are also available.
For more information, call 606.785.0819 or visit Room 311 of the Opportunity Center in Hindman, Kentucky. E-mail inquiries should be directed to: Jean.Johnson@KentuckyValley.org.
