After-School Program

a moment of encouragement

The After-School Program is offered in Appalachian counties where there is sufficient demand. The program currently serves four Eastern Kentucky counties (Floyd, Knott, Laurel and Pike). Students meet with tutors for 3 1/2 hours after school, one evening each week for 13 weeks in the fall and spring. The curriculum includes two hours of individualized reading instruction, one hour of auditory instruction and a half hour of social values instruction. Parents of the children participating in the program are trained as tutors. This program is unwritten by donations. There is no cost to parents.

In order to determine whether the program will benefit a child, the child and a guardian must participate in a screening process. Screenings are held each month. For more information, or to schedule a screening, call the James Still Learning Center at 606.785.4044.
