We also have expenses for the Reading Lab Partnership, conducting student evaluations, parent training workshops, providing materials and administering the After-School Program, which operates in a couple of counties.
Heritage Activities
Hindman Settlement School has always been dedicated to preserving mountain traditions. Through programs such as Appalachian Family Folk Week, the Appalachian Writers Workshop, artists-in-residence and others, the Settlement promotes the region's rich cultural heritage. Participants from throughout the U.S., and from other countries, come to the Settlement each summer to study with well-known and talented artists in many disciplines involving the traditional arts. Donations support scholarships for those who cannot afford our workshops and provide general support for our cultural heritage programming.
Our cultural heritage program includes a full-time Folk Arts Education director that provides cultural programming for students enrolled in Knott County Schools and provides folk arts outreach activities in the broader community (daycare, senior citizens center and a rehab center). This program is currently supported by donations and grants. The Marcia Smith Lawrence Folk Arts Education Fund also supports this work.
In addition to these programs, the Settlement School operates the Marie Stewart Museum & Crafts Shop, a crafts consignment shop that supports local artisans and develops exhibits featuring Hindman's rich cultural history.
Community Service
Most of the Settlement's Community Service programs are operated in cooperation with other local organizations. While the Settlement School provides some funding for these efforts, it has become a smaller share of our annual budget.
While we prefer unrestricted gifts to support ongoing operating expenses, you can also review our program wish list.
Label Collection Programs
The Settlement School also participates in several box-top/label collection programs. Click here for details.
