Dyslexia Program

After-School Tutoring

Volunteer Tutor with Student
A Program Based at the County Level

The After-School Tutoring program is offered in Appalachian counties where there is sufficient demand. The program currently operates in five Eastern Kentucky counties (Floyd, Knott, Laurel, Pike and Pulaski).

Students meet with tutors for 3.5 hours after school, one evening each week for 13 weeks in the fall and spring. The weekly curriculum includes two hours of individualized reading instruction, one hour of auditory instruction and a half hour of social values instruction.

Parents or guardians of the children participating in the program are trained by Hindman Settlement School to serve as tutors. The tutor training workshop is free. However, there is a $100 tuition fee for each semester of the After-School Program. Parents or guardians are expected to volunteer their time to tutor one child. If you have more than one child enrolled in the program, or if you cannot serve as a tutor, you will need to hire a tutor. The fee for that is $30 per night ($390 per semester), in addition to the $100 tuition fee.

In order to determine whether the program will benefit a child, the child and his/her guardian must participate in an evaluation process. Evaluations are held each month. For more information, or to schedule an evaluation, call Hindman Settlement School Dyslexia Program at 606.785.4044.

Starting a Program in Your County
If you are interested in starting a program in your county, contact us. It typically requires at least eight students and their parents to get a program going. The Settlement School will schedule training and assist you with logistics, but the program depends heavily on committed volunteers and a volunteer coordinator. We can also arrange for you to observe in a county that already has a program.
