Once a child is evaluated and approved for enrollment in one of the Settlemen School's dyslexia programs, s/he becomes eligible for participation in an After-School Tutoring program.
After-school programs are run by volunteers (usually parents), who are trained by Hindman Settlement School. Tutor Training Workshops are held in August and February. See a sample workshop agenda. Check our events calendar to see when the next workshop is scheduled. You must pre-register.
Students cannot participate in an After-School Program until a parent or guardian receives tutor training. Classroom teachers, psychologists and counselors are welcome to participate in the Saturday training. After lunch, there is a special session just for professionals. So, be sure and encourage your child’s teacher to attend with you, at least for the Saturday session.
The Tutor Training Workshop will deal with issues such as: What is dyslexia? Why does my child learn differently? What is special about the teaching techniques used by the Settlement School? Why does it work? What can teachers do to help? Parents can find answers to these questions and share their experience with others.
For those who will be traveling long distances, overnight accommodations are available. If you need a room, you will need to call the Settlement School to make arrangements. There is no smoking in any campus buildings. To help with housing expenses, a donation to Hindman Settlement School would be appreciated. Children may not attend the workshop.
If you have questions, call the Dyslexia Program office at 606.785.3499.
