Hindman Settlement School's history is tied to the Settlement house movement, which spread first in urban areas and then later to rural areas.
Lillian Wald was the founder of the Henry Street Settlement in New York City. Her biographer described the "settlement idea" as a plan "for the social classes to know each other, to educate each other and to work together for the improvement of the neighborhood."
Hindman Settlement School has a long history of working together for the improvement of the community. Its educational mission has always been driven by a determination to offer programs that respond to the current needs of the community. Examples of some of our community service programs are included in the links to the right.
