4-H Youth Development

County Extension OfficeHindman Settlement School was engaged in extension work in Knott County long before the Commonwealth developed a County Extension Service. When the University of Kentucky did undertake its county extension service, Hindman Settlement School became a partner in that work.

Hindman Settlement School has provided housing for the Knott County Extension Service's 4-H Youth Development Program Director on the Settlement School campus for many years. The current director, Jim Phelps, has lived on campus since 1973 and is part of the Settlement School "family."

Phelps has led many tours of campus and is a familiar face at many Settlement School events. He also pitches in as a caretaker of the Settlement School's campus.
