For the last 30 years, the New Opportunity School for Women has worked to provide a cost-free three-week residential program where women would take courses on subjects such as self-care, self-esteem, and goal-setting. These courses are tailored to help Appalachian and Kentucky women to conquer the barriers that they are often met with in their day to day life, in regards to education, employment, and financial independence. Unfortunately, not every woman who would benefit from our programming can attend an intensive three-week residential program, often siting things like childcare and work.
New to 2017, the New Opportunity School for Women is bringing one-week, non-residential, programs to the Appalachian Region. These programs, which are a condensed version of our three-week programming, are being hosted with community partners throughout the Appalachian region. With classes running from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the women will take classes on self-esteem, goal-setting, and self-care, as well as participate in an expressive arts activity, and a community service project.
The New Opportunity School for Women realizes that there are often still barriers that Appalachian Women face in attending programs, even if they are in their backyard. The New Opportunity School for Women is working with our community partners to provide transportation assistance (may be ride-sharing or funding), childcare (on-site), and light meals (breakfast and lunch), free of cost to participants.
Next month, September 11th-15th, the New Opportunity School for Women will be partnering with the Hindman Settlement School to host one of these one-week programs in Hindman, Kentucky.
If you would like any more information about the non-residential program, or would like to join our mission by becoming a community partner, please contact the New Opportunity School for Women at email@example.com or (859) 985-7200, or the Hindman Settlement School at firstname.lastname@example.org or (606) 785-5475.
