Grow Appalachia & Agrilachia Prepares for Spring

It’s been five years since the Hindman Settlement School first partnered with Berea College to become a Grow Appalachia site. As part of Grow Appalachia, we offer gardening classes as well as free seeds and plants to the local community. During this time, we have served over 200 families who have grown approximately 100,000 lbs. of fresh, organic produce. This year, we are expanding our programming with our “Agrilachia” class series focused on Appalachian food culture. Corey Terry, the Settlement School’s farm manager and founder of Artos Bread Company, will teach the first Agrilachia class on making his locally-famous homemade sourdough bread.

In the middle of January for our first Grow Appalachia meeting of the year, we gathered for our second annual community seed swap. The Daughters of the American Revolution donated over 14,000 seed packets to give out to the community. Avid gardeners from around the region braved the January cold to share and add to their family heirloom seed collections. One family shared six different types of old-fashioned beans seeds as well as hard-to-find musk melon seeds. All families came away with a grocery bag (or two!) full of seeds to grow at home.

All Grow Appalachia and Agrilachia classes and events are free and open to the public. However, people who register for membership in Grow Appalachia receive free seeds, transplants, tools, technical support, and access to the Kentucky Colonel’s Community Cannery.

There is still time to sign up for Grow Appalachia! Membership is restricted to those who live in Knott and nearby counties, but all are welcome to attend classes. Contact Ali Hintz at ahintz@hindmansettlement.orgto sign up or for more information.
